The Bhopal Gas Tragedy – Negligence or Genocide?

November 3, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

A few minutes past midnight, December 3rd, 1984, a toxic cloud spread over the central Indian city of Bhopal. Before morning light, more than 3,000 citizens were dead and 200,000 badly injured. In the succeeding weeks and months, the death toll rose to at least 30,000. Health, environmental, and economic impacts continue to effect residents’ lives today.

A tragedy for sure, but was it genocide? And if so, of whom and by whom? Today, one month before the 35th anniversary of Bhopal, we will consider the many choices made by individuals, industry and government leaders in the years leading up to the disaster, in the succeeding years, and even today. Then each of us can decide for ourselves.

Scott Berger served from 2001-2015 as the Executive Director of the Center for Chemical Process Safety, an organization created to help companies prevent accidents like Bhopal. He visited Bhopal in 2004.
