17th Annual Sacks-Wilner Holocaust Education Program – Helping Themselves with the Help of Others: Jewish Rescue During the Holocaust Presented by Deborah Dwork

March 17 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Helping Themselves with the Help of Others: Jewish Rescue during the Holocaust
“Rescue” conjures the image of Christian aid to Jews during the Holocaust. And happily, there were heroic gentiles who helped. In this talk, DD shifts our lens to focus on efforts Jews took to rescue themselves. At no point were Jews the passive objects the Germans and their allies depicted. On the contrary: to the extent that they could, they never ceased to seek a way to be agents in their own fate.

Debórah Dwork is the Director of the Center for the Study of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Crimes Against Humanity at the Graduate Center – City University of New York. Pathbreaking in her early oral recording of Holocaust child survivors, Dwork weaves their narratives into the history she writes. Her award-winning books include Children With A Star; Flight from the Reich; Auschwitz; and Holocaust.
