Evette was a dear friend and chavruta who brought joy, passion and caring to the world around her. She always encouraged her friends and colleagues to stretch beyond the limits we thought we had. That piece of her that was so committed to everyone else lives on in us all.
Rabbi Adrienne Rubin
On several occasions I was fortunate to be seated a few rows in front of Evette at services. To hear her voice singing the prayers was such a special treat and added to the spiritual impact of the experience.
Ron Warren
It was an absolute joy to know Evette. I especially enjoyed our conversations that happened by chance away from Adath when there would never be a lull in our conversations. Miss those and definitely miss Evette.
Marilyn Greenberg
I was a student with Evette and thought the world of her. She embodied a joie de vivre with her singing, her smile, her kind words and her ability to listen well. I just ran across some pictures of her at one of our retreats, and of course, she was smiling!
I remember her fondly and my prayer is that her memory will live on in your heart as a blessing, that it will always inspire you, and that it will always bring a smile to your face. Rabbi Robert Green
Evette displayed such joy in singing, be it during services or in concert, and projected the essence of the songs she’d sing, regardless of the genre. Her own compositions are in varied musical styles and are quite approachable to learn, as evidenced by how many of her prayer settings have become part of the Adath Israel congregational singing repertoire. I like to think back how she’d laugh that infectious laugh as we’d joke around during rehearsals when I’d ask her if I should play whatever piece she’d give me with a Latin beat on the piano, after which she’d sing to demonstrate how she’d want me to play the accompaniment. Bill Beitmann
I miss Evette’s generous, throaty chuckle. Whenever I addressed the congregation, I always checked to make sure that she was in the crowd. If she was sitting in the pews, the speech was guaranteed to be a hit. Evette would engage intently and laugh often, robustly, and good-naturedly. Her happiness was infectious. Seth and Rachel Park
Evette was a beautiful, generous soul who had a kind word for everyone and comfort for those who needed it. She had an immense music talent — her spectacular voice (shades of Minnie Riperton!), her vast oeuvre of original compositions, and a deep spirituality that pervaded all of it. We love her still! Cantor Anna Ott
I will always love Evette for the way she brought laughter to our rehearsals together. The hours I spent with this talented musician, performing, composing, transcribing, and accompanying, were always full of absolute joy. She will forever be one of my favorite rehearsal and performance partners.
Dave Schlossberg
Evette’s passion for music was matched only by her kindness and generosity. She had a special way of connecting with everyone. We loved hearing her sing with you and the family! Her memory lives on through her music as it continues to comfort and uplift.

Evette encouraged me everytime I read torah. Encouraged me with a smile and a high 5, congratulated me each time. Always friendly. I Felt very close to her even without Torah. Special friendship. I loved her meditation classes and Rosh hodesh classes.

So many things! I remember Evette’s support and encouragement when I first started reading Torah. She was my biggest cheerleader. Aaron Appelstein
Evette was such a wonderful part of our Women’s League and Adath in general. She always willing participated in our Women’s League events and always enhanced the WL Annual Shabbat service with her beautiful voice and joyful presence, and of course her infectious laugh. She is missed. Robyn Gordon
You always knew when Evette was present for services. Her voice was discernible above all others, as she sang with such passion and emotion. Evette was always friendly, asking about the family and how old the grandchildren were. If there was a sadness in your voice, she offered comfort with an invite to reach out anytime. She is, and always will be missed.
Etta Bray
Evette was so funny and had the best laugh. She genuinely cared about our family and she knew we cared about her and her family. It was a bond that developed over the years and her absence is deeply felt. May her memory be a blessing.

I was always inspired by Evette’s constant desire to improve herself and to gain knowledge. She was a forever student and was so very talented. I loved her voice, her creativity and desire to share and grow. She always greeted me with warmth and caring. I miss her presence in my life and at Adath. Glenda Mendelsohn
The Kaufman family always will remember the warm and welcoming embrace Evette always showed when we entered Adath Israel. Her smile, laugh and beautiful voice will always live on in all of our memories! May her memory always be a blessing to all who were lucky enough to have been part of Evette’s life.

Evette was a student of Torah her whole life. She loved learning for its own sake, whether it was in her rabbinical and cantorial studies at AJR or an adult education class at Adath that I was teaching, she was totally devoted. She wanted to make sure that each day, she learned something new. It was an honor and a privilege for me to help Evette in her journey to become a rabbi. I was proud to serve as a mentor. Evette would come into my office and we would talk Torah as she was preparing a sermon. She wanted and needed to go deeper and would ask questions about the process. We would talk about books, resources, and techniques to use when teaching Torah. It was a blessing for me because in answering her questions I would think more deeply about what I do. I continue to miss her presence. May her name always serve as a blessing. Rabbi Benjamin Adler
I will always remember Evette’s contagious hearty laugh and her insightful comments at our seders. And of course, I can never forget her beautiful voice that added so much to our seders and covered for the rest of us (Katlins excluded) who couldn’t much carry a tune. We miss Evette. Lara, Arel, Becky and Maya Weisberg

Evette Katlin was a loving and a very caring woman. She inspired me with her voice and was a fine musician. She was a member of the choir I directed in Los Angeles in the early 80’s. The congregation appreciated her fine voice. I was uplifted and lucky to have known her and to have learned from her. Cantor Susan Berkson
Multi-talented singer, musician, nurse, social worker; a learner always. This was Evette. What struck me always was her gentle, welcoming manner mixed with an incredible kindness. All of this was mixed in with an intelligence and passion to grow and learn and become better. What she may not have realized was that she was already the best in so many ways. She was a class act. I miss her. Audrey Abramowitz
Whenever Rabbi Grossman led a Talmud or parisha study session, Evette and I loved to partner and study together.

When I think of Dr. Evette Katlin, I’m reminded of her beautiful singing voice, the music she wrote and shared, and her leyning of Torah at Shabbos and Jewish holidays. One summer, she and I decided to trade Hebrew lessons (from her) for Guitar lessons (from me) and we met at the Katlin condo every few weeks. It was fun to share what we knew, and we enjoyed each other’s company in these pursuits. I also remember the inspirational Women’s evenings she led at Adath on Rosh Chodesh. Those were also times of friendship and sharing together.
Rebecca Mercuri
Evette was a great example for her cantorial colleagues. She juggled 2 careers flawlessly and with love of both. Her uplifting personality was a pleasure to be around. Cantor Ralph Goren
Evette, in addition to being a talented musician with an angelic voice, was also a kind and compassionate friend whose presence could light up any room.
Marshall and Caryn Alter
I have good memories about the enriching activities Evette thoughtfully planned for the Rosh Chodesh group at Adath Israel.

I shall never forget our many wonderful Thanksgiving Dinners together. But when I think of Evette what comes to mind is how kind and caring she was to me and Andrew. And of course her Voice and her Laugh. Bill Agress
Aunt Evette had a gift for making everyone feel special, never forgetting a birthday and always bringing joy with her infectious laughter. She found humor and happiness in the little moments that many overlook, and she was always genuinely interested in what was happening in my life. Her warmth and kindness were a gift to everyone who knew her, and her memory will forever inspire us to live with the same love and joy she did.
Erica Lipman
When we remember our beautiful sister-in-law, Evette, we are filled with love and admiration. Her beautiful voice and infectious laugh are just a few of the gifts she shared with us. But beyond her remarkable talent, it was her sweet, happy nature and her deep love for family that truly defined her.
Evette had a way of making every moment brighter, and her warmth and kindness were felt by all who knew her. As we gather tonight, we are fortunate to hear the beautiful music she created, a lasting echo of her spirit. Though she may no longer be with us in the physical sense, the memories of her laughter, her joy, and the love she so freely gave will remain in our hearts forever.
Evette, you will always be a part of us. Your legacy of love, music, and family will live on, forever cherished and never forgotten.
Robin Rosen
We wish you all strength, light, and all of the love that she gave to others just by her smile and presence. May her memory always be for a blessing. It certainly lives on in your two incredibly talented and wonderful children.

I think back to our first Kabbalat Shabbat at Adath. As we began to chant Tzadik Katamar, an unusual, gorgeous sound arose behind me and to my right.
It was Evette’s voice. A voice like no other!
I was immediately smitten with Evette’s chanting, its crystal, clear quality AND, her uniquely beautiful renderings up and down the range of octaves.
I still find, as I sit in our sanctuary today, that I think of Evette…
… just behind me and to the right….

I loved Evette. She was a sister musician to me. Four main memories.
1. We did a version of the Andrew Sisters at Adath many years ago, much fun and good sounds together!
2. We did a Purim music program at a local synagogue together (with other cast members). Part of it was improvisational conversation with Evette and I’ve never laughed so hard. She knew how to be at ease in front of an audience.
3. Her Rosh Chodesh sessions were beautiful: she prepared inspirational quotes and got us all involved as sisters lighting candles together.
We swapped stories freely (around a topic) and I felt a genuine connection with other women in the group.
4. She was a quiet and conscientious listener, and offered ideas in a modest and truthful way. Leslie Burstyn
I will always love Evette, even though she is no longer with us here on earth.
1. I love Evette because she is a comedian’s dream. Her rich, hearty laugh rang out whenever I was performing comedy. Her contagious chortles encouraged the whole audience to join in, multiplying the laughter. 2. Evette sometimes lent her glorious voice to join and support our Adath choir when we presented concerts. I usually was placed next to her, as we are both sopranos. When we lifted our voice to sing, I always wished that the audience would think that her heavenly sound was coming out of my mouth!
Now Evette is in heaven, leading choirs of angels in bringing joy to our lives here on earth.

Evette was warm, easy to talk with, honest and had a great sense of humor
